laddagh, where the ring by that name originated, was a fishing village outside the City of Galway, and is now a suburb of that
city. |
Claddaghs were worn by the local women and
handed down from mother to daughter. If the ring was worn by a girl on her right hand with
the heart pointing out, it meant she was available for marriage. Worn on the left hand
with the heart pointing inward signified that the girl was engaged. Claddaghs serve as
wedding rings as well as engagement rings. |
